Celadon Bowl with Incised Dragon
Goryeo Dynasty, 11th - 13th c. Korea
Diameter: 19.5cm
A thinly potted bowl that is warped from firing. The interior center is finely carved with a swirling dragon in clouds. The interior, exterior and foot-well are covered in an exquisite translucent celadon glaze of pale blue-green tone. The short, straight foot is unglazed and fired to a light brown color with remnants of 14 elongated kiln supports. A large chip to the rim is repaired. With fitted wooden box.
This piece may have been made as an imitation of Longquan wares, as it is very similar in style and form.
A piece of remarkably similar character in terms of thinness, glaze quality, foot-rim form and proportion, Longquan copying Guan-yao, is in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Provenance:
From a private Japanese collection.
